Busy Week

For the one or two loyal fans, sorry I haven't updated lately. It's been a crazy busy week, but here are a few highlights in brief.

1. The Man was out of town so I was a single mom for the week. Need I say more to those with children?
2. I got and accepted a new job offer! I will be doing health education for families of cancer patients at a local health insurance company.
3. Our garden started sprouting. This was especially exciting considering the recent trouble and the fact that my sweet husband planted popcorn kernels for corn plants. I know we are going to have to thin out the sprouts since same sweet husband planted them 2 inches apart instead of the recommended 24-36 inches.
4. I found a half glass of milk next to my husband's reading chair on the day he returned from his week long business trip. The grossness of the find can perhaps only truly be appreciated by my friend Summer who understands the history of experiences with week-old milk. Or anyone else who has made such a find.
5. I tripped over The Child on a family walk resulting in a bump and scratched forehead. The worse part was that not two seconds before this happened, The Man said we should be more careful or The Child was going to get run over.
6. The Child got a bloody nose at school today. Today was also the first day I let her wear the shirt we just bought for family pictures. Still hoping to get the blood stains out.

We are now relaxing watching The Incredibles (or the "Kre-bles" as The Child says). It's nice to have The Man home and the feeling of looking forward to a new phase in our lives as I start a new job.

Blog Makeover

I have been seeing many other bloggers winning contests and I think it's time for me to enter and hopefully win too! Eightcrazy Designs are having a contest to win a banner for your blog and I would LOVE to win. Although I'm fairly savy with the whole internet and computer things, programming is far from my talent list. I need someone else who can swoop in a spice up the less than exciting look of my blog. After all, I'm still using the free blogs template that come at blogger. Pick me, pick me!

How Much Do You Love Your Man?

I read this "experiment" and found it intriguing. Not that my man would EVER agree to such a thing, but I found it humorously written and an interesting test of marital closeness.

No Shame

I started a blog out of peer pressure. I thought, "sure, I'll start one, post a few pics of my kid, whatever." Then I started posting, and even more started reading other blogs. It's officially to the point that I'm addicted. And not just to posting or reading other blogs. I'm really into the comments. I have come to accept that I like comments. I crave comments. I get sad when I don't get comments. And I'm not alone. Just check out this blog, or this one. Other people are so obsessed with comments that there are whole contests around them. (I would enter if I could just figure out how.) See, I'm not the only one so self-conscious that I need to know people think my life/writing is funny, boring, crazy, or the like. So I'm asking you, begging actually, please post on my blog. I allow anonymous comments so you don't even need an account. I will now get back up off my knees. Oh, and I promise to comment on your blog too.

Planting a Garden

A garden is a great way to enjoy fresh produce and a much lower cost than you can get at the stores. Here are the simple steps we have followed to enjoy a home garden.

Step 1: Purchase a house with land to plant garden.
Step 2: Determine where to plant garden, clear away plot, add topsoil and prep for plants.
Step 3: Purchase plants, leave on deck to die for a week.
Step 4: Plant said plants in the ground hoping they will still grow.
Step 5: Lovingly water daily.
Step 6: Forget the turn off sprinkler, flood basement.
Step 7: Frantically call neighbors at 11 pm to borrow shop-vac to move water in basement.
Step 8: Extract no less than 20 gallons of dirty water from carpet - after moving all furniture, unhooking electrical equipment, and staying up all night.
Step 9: Borrow industrial fans from same neighbor, pull up carpet and use fans to blow dry carpet and pad. Leave running for a minimum of 24 hours.
Step 10: Swear off gardening and leave plants to die. (ok, ok not really. But I question whether all this is worth it for 3 tomatoes plants and two peppers.)

See how simple and cost effective a garden can be!

Soap Opera Sunday

Yet again, another something I stole from someone else's blog but lots of fun! I read about Soap Opera Sunday where you tell your horrible dating tales for all to share. So here is my contribution.

It was one summer during college, possibly the one between high school and college, I can't remember for sure. I had met this guy, let's call him Nate, while hanging out with a group of people. We had hung out in group settings a few times before he asked me out on a one-on-one, actual date. He appeared normal in the group settings, and I had no reason to think otherwise, so I agreed.

He invited me to go to a concert with him. It was a band he LOVED, and I thought was ok. Not a band I would have bought tickets for out of my pocket. He also had passes to listen to the band before the show at a local radio station. The radio station thing was in the afternoon with the concert at night. I was already a little concerned it was going to be a long date, but had already agreed.

Nate picked me up in his jeep. It's the summertime and the jeep top is off. We drive 45 minutes on the freeway in the gusting wind to get to the radio station. There was no conversation in the car because it was impossible to hear over the roar of the wind, other cars, and general freeway noise. I'm not a huge fan of wind-whipped, tangled hair.

When we arrived at the radio station, they put us along with the other listeners in a conference rooms with one of the DJs. Nate spent more time talking with the female DJ than me - MUCH more. He was interested in becoming a DJ and was fascinated by her. My attempts to join the conversation fell flat. Any of my questions were answered with one word. Not off to a great start.

After the radio gig, we went to my sister's house who lived in the area. We chatted with her a while. By we, I mean me. This boy barely said a word. To anyone. By this point I was more than ready to end this miserably silent date. I tried to play the "I'm not feeling well" card. He even bought it and we tried to find someone else to take my ticket for the concert with no luck. I ended up feeling bad about ditching him and agreed to go.

We went to a silent dinner. Trying to get this boy to talk was worse than pulling teeth. I don't remember all the details surrounding the dinner, but I know he made me pay for my own. Nice.

Off we head to the concert. By this point, I'm actually grateful for the open jeep. It relieves the pressure and awkwardness of me carrying the conversation. We park at the venue which is next to a lake that reeks of salty, brine shrimp. Gross is an understatement. As we go inside he pulls out earplugs and tells me that he "always wears earplugs at concerts. They are so loud that you can damage your hearing". However, he fails to think his date's hearing is worth saving and doesn't offer or have another pair.

The concert was mediocre at best. One more than one occasion I walked around on my own because he didn't want to leave his post. By the end I stopped telling him I was leaving, I just left, and went outside for a while. When the show finally ended we walked out to the car. We were completely blocked in. The parking "attendants" had literally parked cars in a solid square. No aisles, no spaces, no chance of a quick escape. Not one could move until the people on the outside of the grid left. We sat waiting for everyone else to leave. Once again, in the jeep I have never been more grateful that I didn't have to talk to someone. I think in all, my date said no more than three complete sentences to me.
